Karen Szymanski, D.O., M.P.T.

Dr. Szymanski received her medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA.  Prior to entering medical school, she received her Masters in Physical Therapy from the University of Scranton in Scranton, PA.  She completed her general surgery training at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, NJ.  After her fellowship in Burn Surgery in the Bronx, NY, she completed her Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery training at SJRMC in Paterson, NJ.

Q.  Why did you choose to pursue cosmetic surgery?

A.  What inspired me was the fact that my mother was burned when she was an infant, and she required care from plastic surgeons.  Plastic and reconstructive surgery incorporates a large variety of both operative and non-operative areas. In addition to training in cosmetic or aesthetic surgery, a student receives training in hand surgery, microsurgery, craniofacial surgery, and reconstructive surgery. While in training, you also learn about non-operative and injectable treatment for patients.

Q.  What do you enjoy most about your work?

A.  I enjoy a variety of aspects of plastic surgery, but what I find especially rewarding is performing reconstruction for breast cancer patients who have had to undergo a mastectomy. On the cosmetic side, I enjoy providing patients with an in-office facelift under local anesthesia and oral sedation.

Q.  What positive things have you seen take place in the medical field since you began your career, and what improvements would you like to see in the future?

A.  Some of the positive things I have observed include direct to implant breast reconstruction, pre-pectoral breast reconstruction, and reconstruction after lumpectomy.

Q.  What is it like interacting with patients on a day-to-day basis?

A.  Interacting with patients from day to day covers the entire gamut of emotions: it’s exciting, fulfilling, exhausting, heartbreaking, frustrating, and challenging.
